Required after filing. Completion unlocks your discharge.
Debtor education (also called a financial management course) is a federally required course completed after you file for bankruptcy. It covers personal financial management, including budgeting, credit management, and financial planning. The course takes approximately two hours and must be completed through a U.S. Trustee Program-approved provider.
Without a completed debtor education certificate filed with the court, your discharge cannot be granted. This is one of the most common reasons discharges are delayed or denied.
File your bankruptcy petition (debtor education comes AFTER this)
Complete your ~2-hour financial management course
Receive your completion certificate (Official Form DE 1300 or equivalent)
File the certificate with the bankruptcy court
Upload certificate to your JustiPal™ Document Vault
Important: You must complete debtor education AFTER your case is filed but BEFORE your discharge is entered. Do not take debtor education before filing — it must be taken with the correct case number.
⚠ Taking debtor education before filing (it will be invalid)
⚠ Using an unapproved provider
⚠ Forgetting to file the certificate with the court
⚠ Missing the deadline — your case may be closed without a discharge
